Going to Church for first timers.
|
What do I expect? Question. I have never been to a Church before. I will feel out of place as I do not know anybody. Answer. Do not worry, the Church members are very friendly and welcome those attending for the first time, Christian or non Christian. You will soon feel at home and make new friends.
Question. What do I gain by going? I am not religious or have no faith. AnswerYou loose nothing by going. Most people have anxieties about doing a new thing, your concern will be lessened once you take the first step. You will learn something new and perhaps enjoy the experience. It may be the beginning of a good thing in your life.
Question. I already have another faith. Why do I need to go? AnswerIt is an experience to see how other faith (or Church) works. It may be a life changing experience for you, the answer to your question or problem. Go anyway and learn about Jesus and Christianity.
Q. What about Children? AnswerMost Churches have a Creche and a Sunday school for older children. Your Children will enjoy the various activities designed for them. You will have time to concentrate on the Service.
Q. I usually have a lie in on Sundays and have other things lined up. Answer. Most Churches have more than one Service and you may be able to attend a later service. Your local Church has the Service times advertised. Like all things you can always create time for Church and attending regularly will soon be part of you life.
Q. What about if I do not like a particular Church? Answer. Most people warm up slowly to anything that is new or different from what they may know or think. Go with an open mind, be ready to ask questions from members of the Church, after the service. Attend any meetings designed for new comers and you will be able to ask more questions and learn more before you make up your mind. Some people will visit many Churches in their area until they find one which they are comfortable with.
QWhat happens at a Church Service? Answer. A Church service is a group of Christians who gather to worship God and pray to Him. It is a celebration with music and dancing and encouragement with the Word of God (Sermon). On arrival you will be warmly welcomed, given a programme and taken to your seat. There may be a stage or an altar where Ministers and the Choir sit. There is singing/dancing, reading from the Bible, prayers and then a Sermon. There is usually an offering collection, where people give money voluntarily toward the work of God. In some services there is the Holy Communion. This is a symbolic act of remembrance of Jesus’s sacrifice for all men by dying on the cross to save us. A non believer may not be able to take part in this, until they know more. After the Church service there is Tea / coffee and refreshments. An opportunity for the Church members to meet you and talk to you, and make you feel welcome. You details will be taken in order to thank you for coming and to invite you to the weekly activities. You will be given some literature about the Church and its weekly activities, which you will be welcomed to attend.
