Halloween.

Halloween like many other events has become commercialised, and its significance lost in the activities and traditions that people carry out as part of the event.

The origins and history of halloween are well documented, A pagan festival celebrating the day the spirit of the dead, was believed , to come down to earth to play ‘tricks or treat’ on people. The Christian Feast of All Soul’s day, which celebrates the good things about people who have died, was many years ago moved to the same day.

There are good and evil spirits. Parents must be careful so that the evil spirits and their agents do not use the so called ‘harmless fun’ to lure and recruit their children in to evil. Adults should be careful that the Halloween parties that they attend, are not used as recruiting events into evil societies.

The concept of’ Trick or Treat’ teaches children to commit an unkind act if they are not given sweets, money or presents. These children often go unaccompanied, in the dark to carry out these atrocities. There will be thousands of stories about what these Treat or Trick children do to cars, front doors and how intimidating their actions are to the vulnerable people in the society.

On this Halloween parents and their children, should think about what the day is about and not join in harmful and meaningless activities. This Halloween it is time to

  1. Realise that everybody has a Body, a Soul and a Spirit. We look after our bodies, feeding it, clothing and adorning it. It is time to concentrate on our spirit. Our spirit is that part of us made in the image of God, who made us. It is that inbuilt goodness, compassion, caring nature and the gentle voice that tells or convicts us when we think or attempt to do a bad or evil thing.
  2. Look after our Spirit and not involve it in any wrongdoing, or allow it to be    associated with evil.
  3. Think about the ‘Saints’ (good people who have done good things when they were alive) and celebrate them. To think about their good works and examples and try to copy them.
  4. Determine to become a good and better person. This involves looking deep at ourselves, accepting the bad and ugliness that we see, realising the bad parts of us and to determine to change for the better.
